Ridge
"Lytton Springs" 2008 . . . . . 30.99
91-93/100 - Wine Advocate. "The 2008 Lytton Springs Proprietary
Red, a blend of 74% Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah, and 5%
Carignan, possesses a deep ruby/purple color
and good acidity, and a more closed style than the
Geyserville, with a firmer, more restrained
overall personality. It should drink well for 7-8 years." (California)
MORE GREAT REDS
Garrida
Vinho Tinto 2007 . . . . . 8.99
88/100 - Our score.
Full-bodied with flavors of ripe red berries and a
touch of vanilla, this Portuguese red offers tremendous bang-for-buck.
There is a brambly, earthy thing going on which adds
to the complexity. This bold wine is completely dry
and finishes with very soft tannins.
A blend of 60% Tinta Roriz, 20% Jaen and 20%
Touriga Nacional. (Portugal)
Santa Ema
Reserve Merlot 2007 . . . . . 8.99
This wine will knock your socks off. An steal at this price!
90/100 - Wine Advocate.
89/100 - Our score.
This 100% Merlot cuvee from the Maipo Valley is opaque
purple in color. The nose offers hints of coffee,
cherry and vanilla with sweet spices. Sumptuous
mouthfeel with sweet, ripe black cherry fruit on the
palate. Medium bodied and well rounded, with
smooth full flavors of chocolate covered cherries
and soft integrated tannins. Coffee and cream notes add to the
lengthy finish. The wine spends eight months in
oak to enhance the richness and density. A terrific
value, it has more weight than some wines
double the price! (Chile)
Spellbound
Petite Sirah 2008 . . . . . 11.99
89/100 - Our score.
We make a simple but strong statement: For the past
two years Spellbound has produced the best $12 Petite
Sirah in existence. Some Petite Sirahs are big, chewy
and overly tannic. Others are soft, but lacking
intensity and character. Spellbound seems to
have mastered the happy median, producing a
robust, black and blue fruited Petite Sirah while keeping the tannin
level appropriate for everyday drinking. With
rich texture and body, this a very delicious and
accessible offering. (California)
Local Wine Company
"Murphy's Law Red"
Columbia Valley 2008 . . . . . 12.99
89/100 - Our score.
Murphy's Law is a delicious everyday red wine made by
a good friend of ours. The wine is a blend of 75% Merlot,
20% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Franc, sourced from
well known vineyards in the Yakima Valley region of
Washington State. A short amount of
time spent in used oak barrels helps to round out the
texture. The fruit is forward, juicy and completely enjoyable. If you're
looking for a tasty all-occasion red that will
work in almost any setting, this is quite possibly the
perfect choice. (Washington)
